losing your file when you unplug your usb drive from windows

By ben sim

it’s always advisable to select option to remove your external storage devices safely, files went missing after unplugging the external storage abruptly, do happen!

recently, i tried to recover a lost word document on an external usb drive, it was not successful even with data recovery software, so i reckon that it is recommended to take precaution by setting up your windows system restore automatically(run it on a schedule); follow the steps in the link provided to recover your file if it happens.

Create Windows Restore Point Automatically:

  • Click “Start,” type “Task Scheduler” into the search box at the bottom of the Start menu and press “Enter.”
  • Navigate to the “Task Scheduler Library\Microsoft\Windows\SystemRestore” folder in the left pane of the Task Scheduler window.
  • Right-click the “SR” event in the top middle pane of the Task Scheduler window, and click “Properties.”
  • Click the “Triggers” tab at the top of the SR Properties window.
  • Click the “New” button at the bottom of the Triggers pane.
  • Click “One Time,” “Daily,” “Weekly” or “Monthly” under “Settings” in the New Trigger window.
  • Type a start time in the box to the right of “Start” at the top of the New Trigger window.
  • Configure the recurrence, week and month settings under the “Start” box. Different settings appear depending on the time period you selected.
  • Click “OK” twice.

i came across this method of recovering office files *i have not tried it before*, earlier today and decided to post it here cos’ i think it makes sense.

as for the success rate of recovering the lost file will depend on the unfortunate situation how your file was lost,  and how much bytes were saved to the memory when it happened.

brief of how the document was lost, the word file being worked on and saved on an usb external drive at the same time. the usb drive was then plugged into a projector, in the midst, the word document was opened and the drive was unplugged while the projector still on. the recovery software was able to detect the temp file in the drive but the file size was minimal, only few kilobytes which is unusual for a lengthy thesis report. so that’s the story……

otherwise, i think it’s worth trying. please refer to the link here: http://office-recovery.com/
